Multiple Primary Cancers

Abstract
The phenomenon of multiple primary malignant tumors in one patient simultaneous or metachronously, is no longer a medical curiosity. As further advances in diagnost techniques and cancer treatment modalities bring about a progressively larger
percentag
of long term survivors, the proportion of patients with subsequent primary lesions will in crease. More and more cases of multiple primary cancers are being discovered, and active researches concerning multiple primary cancers are being
conducted.
This report deals with the clinical analysis of 72 cases of multiple primary malignant tumors from 8365 cases of tumor registry of Young Dong Severance Hospital during 10 years from June 1985 to June 1995. All cases were confirmed pathologically.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1) The incidence of multiple primary malignant tumor was 0.86%(72/8365), and the mean age 37 male patients at 1st was were 59 years old, and 35 female patients was 52 years old. 1 case was triple primary tumor and 71 cases were double primary
tumors.
2) The synchronous tumor was found in 18cases. The metachronous tumor was found in 53 cases, and the mean time interval between 1st and 2nd cancer was 90 months.
3) In ale patients. stomach cancer and colorectal cancer were the most common 1st cancer. In female patients, the Ca. of Cx. was the most common 1st cancer. And in total patients, the colorectal cancer was the most common 1st cancer.
4) In 53 cases of metachronous cancer, adjvant therapy was performed in 18 cases after first operation.
5) The curative resection ratio of multiple primary malignant tumors was 40.3%. In synchronous tumor, the resection ratio was 28.3%, in metachronous, the resection ratio was 45%.
The curative resection ratio was high in metachronous, so careful follow-up study and early diagnosis of those lesions, based on an awareness of the possibility of second cancer, will substantially increase the survival of these patients.
